We first watched The Wild Robot as a family on one of our movie date nights. It was one of those evenings when we all sat down together, had some snacks, and enjoyed a movie as a family.
We really enjoyed the movie, and after watching it, my 11-year-old son wanted to read the book.
This is actually quite typical of him. When he is choosing a new book, one of the first things he checks is whether the book has also been made into a movie. I think he likes knowing that there is another way to experience the story.
Sometimes he chooses a book because he has already seen the movie, and sometimes he wants to read the book before watching the movie.
With The Wild Robot, we did it the other way around.
We watched the movie first, loved it, and then bought the book.
So, what did we think of The Wild Robot by Peter Brown? And is it a good book for an 11 year old?
The Wild Robot: Book Information
Book: The Wild Robot
Author: Peter Brown
Genre: Children’s Fiction / Adventure
Recommended Age: Around 8–12
Our reader: 11 years old
Reading time: A little over one week
The book isn’t extremely long, but it’s not a super thin children’s book either. My son took a little over a week to finish it.
He didn’t sit down and read for hours every day. He has other activities and things to do, so he usually read whenever he had some free time.
Sometimes he would read for a while and then put the book down. Later, when he had time again, he would pick it up and continue.
So, if your child doesn’t finish books very quickly, I wouldn’t worry about it. For my 11 year old, taking a little over a week to finish The Wild Robot felt completely normal.
What Is The Wild Robot About?
The Wild Robot tells the story of Roz, a robot who unexpectedly finds herself alone on a remote island.
Roz wasn’t designed to live in the wilderness, and at first, she doesn’t understand the animals or the environment around her.
She has to learn how to survive.
As time goes by, Roz begins to adapt to the island. She learns from the animals and slowly becomes part of their world.
One of the most important parts of the story is Roz’s relationship with an orphaned gosling named Brightbill.
Roz becomes his mother and learns how to protect and care for him, even though she is a robot and has never experienced anything like motherhood before.
Through this relationship, the story becomes much more than an adventure about a robot on an island.
It is also a story about family, friendship, kindness, nature, love and belonging.
I think that is one of the reasons the story works so well for both children and adults.
Why My Son Wanted to Read the Book
I think the movie played a big part in getting my son interested in the book.
He already knew who Roz and Brightbill were, so when he opened the book, he wasn’t starting from zero.
He already had an idea of what the characters looked like and what the story was about. That made it easier for him to get into the book.
I actually think this is a great way to encourage children to read.
Sometimes parents worry that children are watching too many movies, but I don’t necessarily see movies and books as competing with each other.
If watching a movie makes a child curious about the book it came from, I think that’s a really positive thing.
In our case, the movie came first, and the book came next.
And honestly, I’m happy with that.
The Wild Robot Book vs. Movie
Since we watched the movie first, my son naturally compared the book with the movie while he was reading.
The main story and characters are familiar, but there are differences between the two.
The movie is visually beautiful and has some very emotional moments. Watching Roz interact with the animals and seeing the island come to life makes the story especially enjoyable as a family movie.
The book, however, gives you more time with the story.
It feels quieter and more thoughtful in some parts, and you get to spend more time thinking about Roz’s relationship with the animals and the world around her.
For my son, I think knowing the movie actually made reading the book more enjoyable because he could picture the characters and the setting as he read.
At the same time, he still found things in the book that were different from what he remembered from the movie.
So if your child has already watched The Wild Robot, I wouldn’t think, “They already know the story, so there is no point in reading the book.”
I actually think the opposite.
The movie can be a great introduction to the book.
Is The Wild Robot a Good Book for an 11 Year Old?
Yes, I would definitely recommend it for an 11 year old.
My son enjoyed the story, and I liked that it wasn’t just an adventure story.
There are plenty of things for children to think about while reading.
Roz has to learn how to communicate with the animals, understand the world around her and eventually care for someone else.
The story touches on friendship, family, kindness, survival and what it means to belong.
These are also great topics for parents to talk about with their children after they finish the book.
I also think The Wild Robot could be a good choice for children who aren’t always excited about reading.
If they have already seen the movie, they may be more willing to give the book a try because the characters and story are already familiar.
How Long Does It Take to Read The Wild Robot?
This will obviously depend on the child, but my 11 year old took a little over a week to finish it.
He was reading around his other activities rather than sitting down for long reading sessions every day.
So for a child who reads for 20–30 minutes here and there, I think finishing the book within one or two weeks is quite reasonable.
I actually prefer this kind of reading to rushing through a book just to finish it.
He could read a few chapters when he had time, put the book down, and come back to it later.
For me, the important thing is that he kept coming back to the book.
What I Liked About The Wild Robot
As a mum, one of the things I liked most about The Wild Robot was the way it explores family and caring for someone else.
Roz isn’t a human mother, but she slowly learns what it means to take care of Brightbill.
I found that part of the story really sweet.
I also liked the connection with nature. The island isn’t just a background for the story. It feels like an important part of Roz’s journey.
And I loved that the story can be enjoyed on different levels.
Children can enjoy the adventure and the characters, while parents may notice some of the deeper ideas about relationships, nature and belonging.
Would We Recommend The Wild Robot?
Yes, definitely.
For our family, The Wild Robot started as a movie we watched together on a family movie date and ended up becoming a book my son wanted to read.
I think that’s probably my favorite part of this whole experience.
My son is the kind of reader who often checks whether a book has a movie before deciding whether he wants to read it. And this time, that little habit worked in our favor.
The movie got him interested in the story.
The story got him interested in the book.
And the book gave him another way to experience the characters and world he had already enjoyed.
As a parent, I don’t think it matters whether a child discovers a story through a book or a movie first.
If one leads them to the other, that’s a win.
So if you have an 8–12 year old who enjoys animals, adventure and heartwarming stories, I think The Wild Robot is definitely worth putting on their reading list.
And if they’ve already watched the movie, even better.
Give the book a try. You might be surprised by how much more there is to discover.
